LOCATION

HONGKONG

Hong Kong surprisingly strong underground kiteboarding scene, that moves from beach to beach depending on the time of year and the wind direction.  As you can see from the picture above some of the beaches in Hong Kong might not be quite how you imagine them, not a skyscraper or neon light show in sight.

Final competition beach info to follow as two possible at this moment at Lantau or Cheung Chue Island, final decision this week.

WIND - WEATHER - WATER

The winds during December in Hong Kong tend to blow from a more easterly direction off the winter monsoon, which is ideally for ??? Wind speeds average around 20kts for November, cross onshore for the competition beach location.

The air temperature for November ranges from 21 - 24 degrees Celsius, with a low chance of rainfall.

The water temperature will be around 23 degrees Celsius.

TRAVEL - ACCOMODATION

The three key accommodation options to get you near to the KTA competition Cheung Sha beach on South Lantau.

Palm Beach Watersports Centre

Okay if you want to be right there staying at the beach itself you could go for the TIPI option at the Palm Beach centre. Yep these are the American Indian style tent things and the centre has five of them in total of different sizes. We have tested them out and they are pretty good and the centre will provide you with sleeping mats and bags (although at an extra charge). The small Tipi sleeps 4, then its 6 up to the one big one that hold 9 people. Prices start from around HK$750 per night for the 4 person one. Also to point out though, things are at camping level, so cold-water shower only and no breakfasts as part of the deal. Also be aware that you will need to always take a taxi or bus to get to any towns or shops if you stay on site, although there are some restaurants a little further down Cheung Sha beach about 10mins walk from the centre.

Palm Beach Tipi's

Monday - Thursday

Medium Tipi costs 700 HKD per night but can sleep 5 - 8 people
Smaller Tipi costs 550 HKD per night and sleeps up to 4 people

Friday - Sunday

Medium Tipi costs 900 HKD per night but can sleep 5 - 8 people
Smaller Tipi costs 750 HKD per night and sleeps up to 4 people

A 20% discount on the above rates is available if you mention KTA, you will also get free sleeping bags and mats with this price

Silvermine Beach Hotel, Mui Wo –

silvermine hotel

Mui Wo is about 10/15mins bus journey from the Palm Beach centre and will be where most riders and the KTA team will be staying. Local organisers the KHKA will be running transport for the competition days from the hotel. Mui Wo has a ferry link that can take you direct into Hong Kong, around 30mins and its about the same to get a taxi or bus back to Tung Chung for the MTR (train) links to Kowloon and Hong Kong. Mui Wo is a town so has most basic facilities, Seven 11, restraints, couple of bars and café’s etc.

Rooms start from HK$450 per night and KHKA are still negotiating for better deals for the KTA as so many people will be staying, so good to say you are with the KTA when booking. We will keep you up to date with any deals as the KHKA inform us.

The Hong Kong International Airport is one of the travel hubs for Asia so easy to get to from just about anywhere. Public transport is very efficient in Hong Kong with a direct train (MTR), bus and taxi service to all major areas and ferrys to all the territories islands. More to add once location is known.

Do not forget to check if you need a visa for Hong Kong or not. Most nationalities will have a visa free period of between 14 and 90 days, but to be sure check the Hong Kong government website visa table on the following link  http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/hkvisas_4.htm
